The Client: University of Toronto Mississauga Art Gallery

The University of Toronto Mississauga Art Gallery needed a flexible rigging system that would allow them to easily adjust the lighting grid from the ceiling to suit different art gallery installations. With each exhibit requiring a unique atmosphere, the gallery sought a dependable solution to accommodate future needs.

Scenework, a dedicated Thern Stage dealer, knew exactly where to turn. They came to us because of our expertise in designing custom stage rigging equipment.

The Challenge: Precision in Every Lift

In an art gallery, lighting plays a critical role in showcasing each piece. It was clear that the project needed to enhance the aesthetics of the space as well as be reliably flexible. The challenge was creating a lighting truss system to house adjustable lighting that also preserves the decorated ceiling after installation. The truss that holds the light fixtures would need to be lowered and raised smoothly, ensuring the lighting grid remained perfectly level across multiple lift points and the ceiling unblemished.

Our task? Design a custom lineshaft hoist with two lift lines on each drum and coordinate those lines with loft blocks for exact alignment. Working alongside the truss manufacturer, we needed to guarantee flawless integration while accounting for the ceiling design, which would prevent future access to the mounting points on the other side. Precision was non-negotiable, and neither was our commitment to delivering a reliable, long-term solution.

The Solution: A Custom Approach to Stage Rigging

With the gallery’s needs in mind, we engineered a dual-drum lineshaft hoist with two lift lines per drum. This ensures even distribution across the truss. In collaboration with the truss manufacturer, we created a seamless fit between the hoist, loft blocks, and truss. We designed every element for precision every time, allowing the space to remain focused on what matters most: the art.

This solution exemplifies the passion and precision we bring to every project. In effect, we delivered equipment that allows this gallery to remain versatile and adaptable for years to come.

The Outcome: Lighting the Way for Future Exhibits

The result? A flexible rigging system for the University of Toronto Mississauga Art Gallery to easily adjust lighting for future exhibitions. Thanks to the customized solution designed specifically for the space, the art on display will shine under perfectly positioned lights.
