Constructing a Counterweight Rigging System: Steps for Success

Our comprehensive custom engineering process starts with you, our customer. First, we begin by gaining a deep understanding of your specific goals and requirements. We help to identify if you need assistance with rigging design and connect you with qualified rigging professionals to aid throughout the project.

Once your rigging application is well defined, we determine if our standard modular models can fulfill your needs. Our ultimate goal is to save you time and money with our recommended solutions. Suppose a custom counterweight rigging system is required. In that case, Thern Stage has several decades of experience and a talented team of engineers to design and manufacture custom sheaves, blocks, and other major components from raw materials (steel, Nylatron®, etc.) at our expansive Winona, Minnesota manufacturing facility. Thern Stage Business Development Manager, Paul Brunner, noted, “We can customize our rigging products in ways our competitors can’t.”

Our employees love a good challenge and enjoy overcoming obstacles even more. When previously updating several masonic temple facilities, we went into each project with the mindset of preserving the history and character of the venues while bringing their systems up to 21st-century performance demands.

Working with the historic Winona Masonic Lodge is an ideal example of a previous client who required a custom counterweight rigging system. An initial inspection revealed that most of the rigging system was original and untouched since its installation in 1909. Although many components were removed and replaced, 12 original counterweight arbors were kept for historical display. The venue is now equipped with new manual counterweight line sets, custom head blocks and arbor guide shoe designs, motorized line shaft hoists, and a touchscreen controller for accurate positioning. We are proud to have helped revive this historic facility and provide new ways for residents to take advantage of a community treasure.
